BEAR DREAMS, Anya Lewin, 2:30 (excerpt), 2002
Lewin, as bear, dreams of her bear self; engaging such conundrums as, "It is the killing of the bear which allows the hunter to know and love the bear." Bear Dreams is part of In the Day the Bear Sleeps, In the Night the Bear Dreams, a multi-media installation/ performance adaptable to various environments. The work premiered in March 2002 at the Dartington College of Art Gallery in Devon, England.

Anya Lewin <anya.lewin@btopenworld.com> is an artist, organiser, teacher and researcher. She is currently a lecturer in Digital Media in the Department of Visual Arts, University of Plymouth, UK. She holds a BA from UC Santa Cruz in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in film and video, and MA in Media Study and Poetics from SUNY at Buffalo, as well as an MA in English from the same institution. She is currently completing a PhD focusing on the performance of identity from Dartington College of Arts. Her work has been shown internationally in festivals and galleries in places such as London, Beijing, Siberia, Berlin, Paris, New York, and San Francisco. She curated (2000-2002) the new media section of HOW2, a webzine exploring non-traditional directions in poetry and scholarship by women. She was the proprietor and curator of Cornershop a gallery/ exhibition/ performance space in Buffalo, NY from 1997-2000. She has published articles in Jacket Magazine, How2, and Performance Research. Most recently she co-curated, with Joasia Krysa, the lecture series Hybrid Discourse and a conference under the same title for the I-[DAT]A exposition (April 2002)..
