UNTITLED NO. 1, Haralez, 6:00 (excerpt), 2001

Untitled No. 1, is an experimental project that fuses electronic noise, video, and performance using a method that calls into question our relationships to time, history, and memory. Haralez’s repetitive, seemingly futile and potentially unending actions merge with an electronic soundscape, which contextualizes the images narratively to expand the historical and cultural framework. The noise consists of sound effects and music that establish a subconscious narration. It echoes the cacophony of electronics in contemporary culture that brings whales to the ocean’s surface to sing and comforts newborns in the neonatal ward. At times this soundscape reinforces the performed actions and at other times it metaphorically recontextualizes them. (Untitled No. 1 has had several screenings including the XXIII Moscow International Film Festival).

Haralez is the collaborative partnership of artists Elizabeth Monoian <elizabeth.monoian@prodigy.net> and Suzie Silver <ssilver@andrew.cmu.edu>. Often experimental, and always critical, our work fuses noise, performance, video and text. We boldly explore the sublime and dare to raise the dead. At times we create a voice for the marginalized and forgotten, while at others we expose the buried signifiers of the familiar.
